Question about laptop
Mar 09th, 2010, 1:22am

Hopefully someone can help.  I am having an issue with my laptop.  my battery charger now longer charges my battery on my laptop so i bought a new charger and battery which happen to be rather expensive and it shows that the charger is plugged into the computer but does not charge.  Any ideas?

Well for one how old is the laptop? What brand is it? Have you searched the manufacturers website for known issues? HP has had some issues with their power connectors on their motherboards and everyone knows about dell's battery issues.

Even with the laptop shut down and plugged in, does the battery charge?

It's about a year old, it's a gateway md2614 u. My girlfriend has searched a few things with it being something with the OS possibly.

the laptop does not charge even when shut down and plugged in

If it won't charge while shutdown, it's not the OS.  Laptops I'm not too good with.  I'll take them apart to figure out the problem, but quite often it'll never go back the same way again.  I did a little snooping and I found this one solution to someone having the same problem on the same laptop, and it fixed it for him.  So you can try it.

Quote:
I found out how to solve this problem...first power down your computer. Then take out the battery, remove the power supply, and then hold down the power button for 30 secs. Put the power supply in only (not the battery). Start your computer after everything is done loading up put the battery back in. Give it a min. and then you should be able to roll your cursor over the battery life indicator in the lower right corner of you computer and is should say charging. I have found that other people have had this problem and it has worked for myself and for them.

If it doesn't work, sounds like bad news.  It's probably a motherboard related issue.  And what I would do is take it apart, get an omnimeter and start testing where the power is losing.  You'll probably find a break in the circuit and can solder it back or kill it trying.  But that's just me.

Thanks for the info.  I'll try it and if it does go that way i'll have a guy at work fix it or just pay for it to be shipped off and fixed by gateway which i'm sure will cost me a pretty penny

Take it into your local techy store and tell them your problem, it seems internal. Sorry.

We told best buy the problem since thats where we got it from they told us to bring it in and they would send it to gateway but i work 12 hour days and get off too late to take it in.  i do have days off but my last two days are always exhausting so i pretty much veg my whole entire weekend.  Gateway told us 6-8 weeks and well i use my computer for work as well and thats just not acceptable so until i'm able to afford a new one.  i'l stick with the problem. thanks for all ya'lls help
